US Military War Cries - JRigh by JRigh US Military War Cries - JRigh by JRigh
Let me start off by saying that I am, by no means, disrespecting the US military. I was a military wife for over 20 years, in three different branches of the military (same husband!). The walllpaper idea came when I was asking my husband what the various war cries were for the branches he served in: Navy, Air Force, and Army.

When he was in the Navy, way back when, they didn't have a war cry, but the SEALS did. I was told by a Navy SEAL friend that their war cry has spread to the seamen, so they use "Hoo-yah!" now. (SIDE NOTE: Another friend in the Coast Guard told me that the CG only recently started using "Hoo-yah!" like the Navy, but also use "Hoo-rah!" like the Marines.] Army is easy ... they use "Hoo-ah!"

But we were stumped by the Air Force.

A friend in Air Force Special Operations Forces (AF Special Forces equivalent) said that many times they used the acronym "HUA!" Which stands for "Heard, Understood, Acknowledged!", but this isn't a true war cry and is usually said in place of, for example, "Roger, that!".

But, as I was talking to him on the telephone, I asked him, "Well, if the AF did have one, what do you think it would be?" All of a sudden I heard a clattering in the background and my friend said, "Ouch! I got a paper-cut!" Voila! The Air Force war cry is born! :-)

NOTE: The size above is 2304x864. If you ask real nice, I may be able to make you a different size! :-) The emblems come from DamselStock here on DA fav.me/d2udlsm. The digitized camo was purchased from Shutterstock.

ANOTHER NOTE:  I did some research and found the official spelling of the Marine war cry is "Hoo-rah" with the 'h' being silent.  I didn't want to misrepresent it in any way since all our Marine friends (and many great DA posters here) said it was "Oo-rah".  But the official spelling is correct ... sorry for any confusion!

Oh? I always thought the Marines said "OOah", with no "r".

Ah well.

They actually spell it "Hoo-rah!"  But the "h" is silent.  The "r" sound is soft, which is why you would naturally think it silent as well.  Google each of these and you will notice the differences right away. :-)

I was in the Navy in the late 90's, (not a SEAL) and the only time I remember using "hoo-yah" was in Boot Camp.  There really didn't seem to be much cause to use it for your standard ship-borne sailor.  When you're wielding a mop, tool, or computer keyboard, you're not really in a "hoo-yah!" frame of mind... Probably similar with the USAF if you aren't a PJ or fighter pilot etc.

You said the same thing as my husband! He said he never remembered a war cry for Navy (1978-82) but that was likely because when he wasn't doing his primary duty, he always had a paintbrush in his hand! lol  Who wants to shout out "Hoo-yah!" when they're painting? lol

:-) My husband would tell you that if you want all the real and virtual benefits of the military without the incredible hardship, then AF is the choice. He said if you like pain, join the Navy or Army. lol

See ... now I know your bias! lol A few days ago, we were joking around about what my hubbie's war cry would be given the three branches he served in, and I came up with:

Hoo-yah-ah-ouch!

Really? Paratroopers would not beg to differ.
They would prove that wrong.

I too am sorry for your loss. You are right though, the Marine Corps battle cry is Ooo-Rah. I'm recently retired Marine and every Marine, regardless of rank or age, says Ooo-Rah when greeting every other Marine.

I love those emblems (seals) for the services. I too was in three branches (Navy, ARNG, and USMC-Ret.)

I am so sorry for your loss! My hubby was a Chaplain during his last tour in the Army and became overwhelmed by sheer number of kids that died (18 to 30 year olds). It heavily contributed to him leaving the military altogether.

But we both recognize that we need people like your late boyfriend and many of our own friends ... they fulfill a role that most of us would not, and I am really grateful for their sacrifices.
